Uppers and downers in the Linnea2 impelementation process

The Linna2 project that kicked off six years ago has finally reached its final phase. The individual library projects are finished but the implementation of the LINDA Union Catalogue is still going on. It is expected to be completed in February 2003, when all the Linnea2 databases will be in production. This article is a brief summary of the whole process and also a glimpse to the future, the plans for eventual development and expansion.

Linnea2 Consortium's experiences of the Sun E10000 server and the Voyager Library System

Nothing is perfect in this imperfect world. Thus also a brand new library system has been down or been painfully slow at times. The fault has not always been with the system, though. This article duscusses all the problems the Finnish University Libraries' Consortium has experienced with both Voyager and the hardware it runs on. It also covers solutions to those problems that have been worked out.

Organising copy cataloguing within the Linnea network

Cataloguing is a most time consuming task in research libraries and it also requires great precision. Copying the entries from other databases can make this process much faster and guarantee a higher standard. However, it is not quite as simple as that, but modern technology provides good tools. This article discusses the streamlining of this process within the Linnea network during the year 2002.

It covers the transition from the VTLS system to Voyager, describes the work flow itself and what remains to be done. It also discusses special issues concerning the OpenURL and problems with materials in Russian.

Electronic Library as a support for reseacrh and learning - a user oriented  information retrieval system

The Finnish National Information Portal will become a service desk for the electronic library, a one-stop-shop service that provides easy access to heterogeneous electronic materials.

The implementation of the portal will require seamless co-operation among the National Library and the other libraries using the service. The National Library of Finland will provide the users a basic selection of services that the local libraries can complement with their own special materials. The portal will also serve as the platform on which the information map mentioned in the university libraries' strategy can be built.

Together with the integrated library system and the digital objects management system the portal will form the infrastructure that enables the libraries to serve their own host organsations efficiently.

The Finnish Polytechnic Libraries and FinELib

In Finland the use of electronic materials owes its popularity mainly to the National Electronic Library FinELib programme that was launched by the Ministry of Education in summer 1997. Its aim is to cover as many disciplines as possible. Libraries have played an important role in its development and the Polytechnic Libraries have participated since the beginning.

After the reorganisation of FinElib  in the year 2000 the chances of the various interest groups to affect the decisions have improved further. The development of the service has since then been coordinated on three levels, by the advisory board, by the Consortium Group and by separate task forces for each discipline. The Polytechnic Libraries have had a representative in each one of these organs.

In his article Esa Lempiäinen discusses this from the point of view of the Polytechnics.
